<p> DIED. Lucius ("Luke") Appling, 83, slick-fielding, Hall of
Fame shortstop; in Cumming, Ga. Known as "Old Aches and Pains"
for complaining to teammates about his ailments, Appling
compiled a .310 lifetime batting average and 2,749 hits in his
20 seasons with the Chicago White Sox. In 1982, at 75, he
delighted the crowd at an Old Timers game in Washington by
slamming a home run off Warren Spahn.
